What are Soft Skills? How to develop your soft skills?

What are Soft Skills?

Soft Skills are your personality traits and behaviors that help you get a job, succeed in your career, and make you a better person. Your soft skills are reflected in how you treat others and how you do your job.

Some examples of Soft Skills are as follows:
  • Integrity (following your principles honestly no matter who is watching)
  • Teamwork (working in a team)
  • Problem-solving (thinking how to solve a problem, instead of making excuses)
  • Critical thinking (analyzing any situation to get the best possible result)
  • Adaptability (the quality of being able to adapt oneself to any situation)
  • Organization (the quality of managing your time and work in such a way that the most important work is done first)
  • Communication (Sharing your point to others in the right way and understanding the point of others properly)

If you have good technical skills but no soft skills, you may get a job but you will not be able to succeed in your career. Even during the interview, the interviewer checks your soft skills more than your technical skills. That's why it is important that you develop your soft skills so that your chances of getting selected in the interview will increase.

How to develop your Soft Skills?

Soft skills cannot be developed in a day or two. You have to work on developing your skills on a regular basis.

To develop soft skills in yourself, you have to follow the following steps:

1. Find your weaknesses

First of all, you have to understand which skill you want to develop, for this it is important that you identify your weaknesses.

Your weakness badly affects on your good qualities. Like - you have a very bubbly personality who likes to make everyone laugh and people become friends with your jokes, that's your goodness. But you get angry or irritated on small things due to which your friends feel bad and your goodness goes in vain. So you have such anger, it is your weakness and you have to control this anger.

2. Decide which skills to develop

You cannot develop all the skills at once. So now you decide which skill you want to develop. Like - if you found out that you have multiple weaknesses like doing your work late, not going to office daily, not managing time properly. You decide which of these skills you want to reduce first.

3. Make a plan to develop skills and follow it

To develop your skill, you need to plan how you will improve your skill. Like - If you want to improve the skill of time management, then you can make such a plan that first of all, make a list of what tasks you have to do in the whole day. After that give a rank to each work that which work should be done first and which one should be done last. Then you do all the work according to the ranking. And do this everyday, not just one day.

4. Monitor your personality and behavior regularly

Keep observing your personality and behavior on a regular basis to find out whether the skill is developing inside you or not. You can set a time that you can do your introspection once a week or once a month to check whether the skill you are trying to develop is getting better or not.

5. Keep practicing

Skill will not develop in a day. Some people may take less time and some more. Therefore, keep in mind that you will have to make continuous efforts to improve your skills.
