Top 20 Universities of India in 2020

The Ministry of Human Resource Deveopment (MHRD) has released the list of top universities of India for the year 2020 ranked under its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

1. Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a deemed university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was established in the year 1909 by Jamsetji Tata and Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and is locally known as the “Tata Institute”. It was ranked 1st among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

IISc campus is spread over 400 acres of land and houses six canteens, a gymnasium, a football ground, a cricket ground, four dining halls, one multi cuisine restaurant, a library, two shopping centers, residencies of the faculty members and other staffs and a lot more facilities.

The university also has India’s fastest supercomputer Cray XC40 in the Computer Centre.

2. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is a central university located in New Delhi, India. It was established in the year 1969 and named after India’s first Prime Minister – Jawaharlal Nehru. It was ranked 2nd among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

3. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in the year 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya, with co-operation from Annie Besant. The university’s main campus is spread over 1300 acres and south campus is spread over 2700 acres. It is also the largest residential university in Asia. It was ranked 3rd among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

4. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a deemed university that was established in the year 1994 by Mata Amritnnandamayi Devi. The university is location in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and has its campuses across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. It was ranked 4th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

5. Jadavpur University, Kolkata

Jadavpur University was established in the year 1955 and it has two campuses spread over 84 acres in total. It was ranked 5th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

6. University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad

The University of Hyderabad is public research university located in Hyderabad, Telangana. It was established in the year 1974 and its campus is spread over 2300 acres of land. The university also houses India’s first automated university library named as Indira Gandhi Memorial Library. It was ranked 6th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

The university campus is also home to 734 plants, 10 mammals, 15 reptiles and 220 species of birds.

7. University of Calcutta, Kolkata

The university is spread over a small campus area of 2.7 acres. It was ranked 7th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

8. Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is a private deemed university located in Manipal, Karnataka. It was established in the year 1953 and is spread over 600 acres of land. The university has two branch campuses in Mangalore and Dubai. It also has two sister campuses in Sikkim and Jaipur. It was ranked 8th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

10. Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi

Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) is a central university located in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi. It was established in the year 1920 at Aligarh and later moved to Delhi. The university has also installed 2,250 kilowatt solar panels on the campus. It was ranked 10th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

11. University of Delhi, New Delhi

It was ranked 11th among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2020.

12. Anna University, Chennai

17. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh
