Computer Device or Computer Hardware
Any part of a computer that you can physically touch is a computer device or a computer hardware. Though there are several types of computer devices, the most popular ones as per modern computers are input device, output device, storage device and networking device. Every computer hardware requires a computer software to function and such software is called a device driver.
You may have experienced that after connecting a printer to your laptop or computer, the printer does not work and, after installing the software from the CD that comes with the printer, it starts printing. Here, the printer is an output device and it requires its software to function properly, this printer software is the device driver that works as a communication medium between the printer and the computer system.
Modern operating systems, like Windows 10, are already equipped with plenty of device drivers that supports most of the computer devices and do not require you to install the software additionally. With such feature, when you connect a new device to your computer, the device is identified and it starts functioning.
There are mainly four types of devices that we see and use.
Types of Computer Device
Devices like keyboard, mouse, microphone that you use to send data to the computer are called input devices. We use a keyboard to enter alphabets, numbers, characters to the computer. We use a microphone to send our voice to the computer.
Camera, Joystick, Scanner, Bar Code reader are few more examples of input devices.
Any computer device through which you get data is called as output device. The words that we type, we see them through monitor so the monitor is an output device. We hear audio through speakers, so the speakers are output device.
Printer, Plotter, Projector are few more examples of output devices.
Storage devices refer to the devices used to store data either permanently or temporary. RAM, Hard disk, Pen drive, Memory card are few examples of storage devices. A storage device is also called as a memory of a computer.
Any device that is used to connect two or more devices together is a networking device or computer networking device. For example: A Wi-Fi card in a laptop allows a computer to connect with other laptop, Bluetooth speaker, wireless keyboard etc. so the Wi-Fi card is a networking device.
